Fresh Start: 7 Tips for a Smooth Back-to-School Transition

Help your child ease from summer fun to school-year success.

By Jo Kutchey, Dean of Students and Faculty

After a season of summer camps, late bedtimes, and endless adventures, shifting back into the school routine can feel like a big leap – especially for our youngest Early School learners. At GPA, we know a strong start helps set the tone for the year ahead. These 7 quick tips will help your family nurture healthy habits, challenge new skills, and inspire confidence from day one.

1. Reset Sleep Schedules

Gradually move bedtime earlier by 10–15 minutes each night until your child is back on their school-year routine. Consistent sleep helps with focus, mood, and energy.

2. Practice School Routines

Reintroduce morning and evening habits – getting dressed, eating breakfast, and packing bags – at school-time pace to help the first week feel familiar.

3. Wrap Up Summer Learning Packets

Set aside 10–15 minutes a day to complete or review the packet to keep skills sharp for the year ahead.

4. Limit Screen Time

Reduce TV, tablet, and gaming time. Replace with reading, puzzles, or outdoor play to inspire focus and creativity.

5. Fuel Up with Good Nutrition

Offer balanced meals – fruits, veggies, proteins, and whole grains – to keep energy steady all day.

6. Support Emotional Readiness

Talk about the first day, validate feelings, and role-play drop-off. Attend GPA’s Early School Parent–Student Orientation & Early and Lower School Information Night, New Parent Gathering, and Main School Teacher Meet & Greet. Check the GPA calendar for details.

7. Give Grace – to Kids and Yourself

Transitions take time. Be patient, allow extra minutes in your day, and celebrate small wins.

Each new school year is a fresh opportunity to grow, discover, and shine – and together, we can make it the best one yet.
