4/5 Students Have a Blast in Science Class

Science class was a blast for Academy fourth and fifth graders this week – literally! During what 4/5 teacher Bob Lapadot historically calls "V-Day," students withstood the cold outside to set off over 60 volcanoes. The volcanoes were made at home with the help of on-line tips, the creativity of the students and their parents, and some good old-fashioned baking soda and vinegar. Another popular ingredient choice was the particularly explosive combination of mentos and Diet Coke.

One of the strengths of this popular project, which the students do during either their fourth or fifth grade year, was the amount of flexibility given to each young scientist, allowing for endless creativity. “Our philosophy is that the children don’t need kits,” said Bob. “They have vivid imaginations. Why not let them run with it? And the results were spectacular – volcanoes of every size, color and shape imaginable."

Students were not shy about volunteering to set off their volcanoes!
James Raudabaugh's volcano successfully erupted before admiring bystanders.
Creativity was an important component of the volcano project.
