GPA Honored for Restoration and Design

The Grosse Pointe Academy renovations to the main school building continue to receive accolades and awards locally, nationally and internationally. Most recently, the Academy received a 2009 Citation of Excellence Award from Learning By Design, a school and university leader's annual guide to architectural services published by Stratton Publishing & Marketing Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia.

From among a multitude of projects submitted throughout the country, the Academy's design project was deemed one of the best by a nationally recognized panel of architects and educational facility specialists. As a Citation of Excellence Award winner, the project will receive special editorial feature coverage and a free listing in the print and electronic Facilities Resources Buyer's Guide. The project and the Academy will also be showcased online at www.learningbydesign.biz.

"The Academy's selection as a Citation of Excellence Award winner from among this competitive field of entries is a genuine tribute to the school and the project," said project architect Theo Pappas, AIA, of Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. in Novi. "I am particularly proud of this award, because the judge and jury were not just architects or designers, but educators and educational planners. This is a continuing testimony to all the hard work and effort of everyone who was so dedicated to making this happen."

The school will receive a commemorative plaque in recognition of this achievement. Head of School Phil Demartini has invited Theo Pappas to personally present this plaque at the Board of Trustees meeting in January.

The Academy also won a Preservation Wayne, Preservation Honor "Regional Neighbor" Award for the restoration of the main school building. Preservation Wayne is Detroit’s oldest and largest preservation organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and protecting the neighborhoods and structures that define Detroit. The Academy will be recognized at the "Past, Forward" 2008 Preservation Honor Awards Dinner at the Colony Club Detroit on November 20.
