For the second consecutive year, Grosse Pointe Academy seventh and eighth graders participated in the National French Contest Exam (also known as Le Grand Concours) with outstanding results. This 60-minute national examination is developed and managed by the American Association of Teachers of French. Its purpose is to help stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of French as well as to help identify and reward student achievement.
The exam is a multiple-choice test of approximately 70 items covering listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension. Students took the test that was appropriate for the French curriculum in which they are enrolled. Their scores were then ranked against students locally as well as nationally who are enrolled in similar curricula.
Competing against both middle school and high school students, the following Academy middle schoolers placed in the top ten nationally: eighth graders Samantha Fitzpatrick (95th percentile with a #2 chapter ranking and #4 national ranking), Grace Rentschler (95th percentile with a #3 chapter ranking and #5 national ranking), Somers Brush (95th percentile with a #4 chapter ranking and #6 national ranking), Henry Brophy (90th percentile with a #8 chapter ranking and #10 national ranking), Robert Stanley (90th percentile with a #8 chapter ranking and #10 national ranking), and seventh grader Katherine Woodward (90th percentile with a #3 chapter ranking and #6 national ranking).
The sixth graders took the FLES exam, which includes a speaking section as well. Students are only ranked nationally for this exam. Kate Krueger ranked #9 nationally, and Caleb Cimmarrusti ranked #10 nationally.
