The Grosse Pointe Academy announced the creation of two scholarships in honor of Early and Lower School Principal Camille DeMario, who will retire at the end of the 2007-08 academic year after an illustrious 39-year career with the school. The scholarships were announced on Tuesday, February 5 during a special celebration in Ms. Camille's honor prior to the State of School meeting.
“Camille has been a vibrant part of the Academy for 39 years,” said Phil Demartini, Head of School, during his tribute to the long-time educator and administrator. “Her contributions to the growth of the school and her legacy are immeasurable.”
Camille's legacy will live on through scholarships granted each year to two students entering first grade, one to a current student and one to a new student. Both awards will be granted to students who demonstrate a strong desire to excel in addition to academic promise. The amount of each award, which will be partially funded by gifts made to the Camille DeMario Scholarship Fund, is a half tuition scholarship.
For the current student award, students currently enrolled in the 5-year-old program are eligible to apply. Applications for this scholarship are available in the Admissions Office and must be completed by March 6. Testing for the scholarship will take place on March 8. Teacher recommendations will also be considered. The recipient of the scholarship will be notified by March 14.
Any potential incoming student who is not currently enrolled in the Early School is eligible to apply for the new student award. Applications for the scholarship are available in the Admissions Office and must be completed prior to the testing date. Testing for the scholarship is offered on March 8 or April 19. Transcripts and teacher recommendations will also be considered. The recipient of the scholarship will be notified by April 25.
