In honor of Memorial Day, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Homsy visited his son Matt's sixth grade social studies class to talk about what it means to be in the Army.
Tying in what the students had studied about the American government, he was able to convey to the students a sense of what it means to be in the Army and to share some glimpses of his 22 years of experiences all over the world, most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. With his prompting, the students came up with the following reasons why a nation needs a military: to keep us safe, to make a point, to stand up for what we believe in, to protect other countries, and to make the world a better place.
Lieutenant Colonel Homsy plans to return in early June to talk with his daughter Hannah's fifth grade class. His son, Ian, is a third grader in Mrs. Stepanek's class.
