For the first time in many years, Grosse Pointe Academy students submitted science projects to the Science and Engineering Fair at Cobo Center. The projects were completed in physics class under the direction of seventh grade science teacher Wendy Jewett. Congratulations go to the following students whose projects were recognized: Jeffrey Woolstrum (Blue Ribbon - Outstanding); Alexa Yates (Blue Ribbon - Outstanding), and Conor Tily (Red Ribbon - Honorable Mention). Conor's project was submitted in the ninth grade category, so he was competing with high school students.
There were over 1400 entries. The exhibits were judged on creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill and clarity. Jeffrey's project, submitted in the Earth and Space Science category, examined the salinity of water versus the penetration of an object. Alexa's project, submitted in the physics category, investigated how the temperature of a magnet is affected when subjected to different temperatures. Conor's project, also submitted in the physics category, tested how the length of the sling on a Trebuchet affects its distance and accuracy.
