A Stitch in Time Saves Nine

In February, as part of a social studies unit, fourth and fifth graders will turn back the clock and experience what school was like for children back in the early 1900s. They will visit the second floor of the Provencal-Weir House, which has been transformed into a one-room schoolhouse, circa 1900, complete with benches, individual chalkboards and McGuffy Readers.

The boys and girls will dress in old-fashioned costumes on the day of their field trip. The girls will wear long skirts with blouses and sweaters or shawls, and the boys will wear pants with socks pulled over them to resemble knickers. The finishing touch will be the vests and the bonnets the students sewed on Friday (with the help of some willing parents) to lend a special authenticity to their trip.
