During a Chapel assembly on April 16, The Grosse Pointe Academy recognized the second through eighth grade students who received the top scores in the Continental Math League (CML) competition. The top scorers for their grade are, from left: second graders Michael French and Elizabeth Stayton, third grader Lily Patterson, fourth grader Nikolas Minanov, fifth grader Caleb Cimmarrusti, sixth grader Jeffrey Woolstrum, and seventh grader Robert Stanley. Not pictured are second grader Alec McWood and eighth grader Evan Schwartz.
The Continental Math League is a nationally sponsored mathematical competition. Students are challenged to solve six difficult problems in thirty minutes. Each correct answer is worth one point. The problems are designed to encourage students to use a variety of problem solving techniques in the areas of mathematical and visual problem solving.
This was the second year that GPA students in grades 2-8 participated in the Continental Math League competition. Grades 2 and 3 have three meets while grades 4-8 have five meets. The top six scores at each grade are sent in to the CML headquarters in New Jersey.
