Sporting their "GPAwn Power" T-shirts designed and silk-screened for them by 4-8 art teacher Bryan Zink, members of the Academy chess team are headed for East Lansing on Saturday to compete in the state tournament held at Michigan State University. This is the third year the Academy chess team has competed in this tournament, the past two years returning with a trophy.
GPA will be competing in the 2007 Michigan Elementary Reserve (K-6) division of the tournament. For the first time, coach Ed Mandell and faculty advisor Wendy Demartini have put together a sixth grade team, made up of (from left) Jeffrey Woolstrum, Jalen Battle, Conor Tily and Dylan Demkowicz. In addition to the four sixth graders below, team members are Nicholas Harrell (grade 1), Gabriela Cavataio (grade 2), Carly Demkowicz (grade 2), Elizabeth Stayton (grade 2), Jared Demkowicz (grade 3), Robert Whitaker (Grade 3), Joseph Cavataio (grade 4), and Derek Demkowicz (grade 5).
