Eighth graders took on a variety of roles in the June 10 production of West Side Story. In the program, performers reflected on the meaning of friendship and loyalty based on the musical’s violent depiction of gangs and the results of racial dissension.
Students created the choreographies, designed sets, arranged costumes and experienced what goes into producing a play behind the scenes. They also took the stage, swapping lead roles.
“The goal is to give students an opportunity to work together to create a cohesive production,” explained Director Marion Chrisner. “The student is more important than the production and personal growth of each student is the main goal.”
Musical accompaniment was provided by Marion Chrisner (keyboard), Lawrence DeLuca (bass), and Joe Chila (percussion). Video production was under the direction of Lawrence DeLuca.
