Academy students are introduced to athletics and the spirit of healthy competition at a young age through physical education class and an after school intramural sports program. They go on to compete in grades 6-8 (and in some cases as early as grade 5) in interscholastic athletics. Teams face other independent schools in soccer, tennis, cross country, basketball and lacrosse for boys, and volleyball, cross country, basketball, tennis and soccer for girls.
The long-term objective of the athletics program at The Grosse Pointe Academy is to help students build character, hone leadership skills, encourage fair play, and form a positive self-image. The emphasis is on producing young people who seek a healthy, active life style, dare to take risks in order to learn, and strive for excellence.
