Christian Life and Community Service

An Academy eighth grader wrote the following reflection: "Christian Life is a class that gives me time to think back and reflect on my actions. It helps me strengthen my morality and become a better person. I have also learned more about true compassion and selflessness, and how even the smallest gestures of kindness can make a huge impact on a person's life."

One of the Academy's educational goals is to prepare students through Christian principles and sound moral teachings to become effective leaders, responsible citizens, and caring stewards. Monday morning chapel assemblies for Grades 4-8, monthly chapel assemblies for Lower School children, holiday celebrations and Christian Life classes for Grades 1-8 introduce religions around the world in addition to teaching about Christianity. The focus is on helping each student develop a reverence for all people and incorporate strong moral and ethical values in his or her life.

Students are also taught about compassion through community service. Community service hours both in and outside of school are required in Middle School, and school-wide community service efforts - from serving food to the homeless or participating in a charity run to decorating valentines for seniors - are coordinated at all grade levels by a faculty member. The importance of giving back to one's community is one of the many lifelong lessons Academy students take with them after they graduate. As that GPA eighth grader so eloquently put it, small gestures do indeed change lives. Sometimes it is the person who makes the gesture who is the most changed by the experience.
